Why Most SEO Tools Give You Data Instead of Answers

Open most SEO tools and you get a wall of numbers: keyword difficulty, traffic estimates, a site health percentage, a list of 400 issues. Then you are on your own. The tool did its job. It gave you data. Deciding what to do with it, in what order, on which page, is still your job, and it is the part most people get stuck on.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Data tells you what is happening. An SEO action plan tells you what to do next, in order.
  • Every fix should say what it is worth, so you know where to start.
  • A link suggestion is only useful when it names the page, the sentence and the anchor.
  • Predictions should be labeled estimates until they are checked against real results.
  • Score the page against the pages ranking today, not against a generic checklist.

How our SEO tools turned into an SEO action plan

I run an agency with nine people. A while back I added up what I was paying for reporting tools. One was about $900 a month. Another was about $300. By the time I finished adding, it was around $1,500 a month, and my staff still had to come ask me what to do with the numbers.

“I don’t know why I’m paying these guys $900 a month”

So I built what I actually needed, one piece at a time. First a view of what we rank for. Then what we lost and when. Then what competitors rank for that we do not, with a button that picks the best page to optimize. Then page scoring with entities, questions and originality. Then a list for my staff called What to work on next. That became elev8tor.

The point was never more data. The point was that my staff could open it on a Monday and know what to do without me looking over their shoulders. When I showed it in class, this is how I described it:

“even if you didn’t know what you were doing, it would tell you what to do with it.”

Why big SEO tools stop at data instead of strategy

To be fair, the big platforms are good at what they do. Semrush and Ahrefs have far larger keyword and backlink databases than we do, and many more marketing modules. If you need to research a whole market, they are hard to beat. If you are weighing them, our Semrush alternative page compares the two approaches plainly.

But a database answers the question “what is out there?” Most people in front of an SEO tool are asking something else: what do I change on this page this week? An SEO strategy sets the direction for the business. An SEO action plan turns that strategy into this week’s work, page by page, so performance actually moves. That is a page level question, and it has to be answered against the pages ranking for that keyword today.

Most websites I look at are like a piano that is out of tune. Nothing is broken. Everything is a half step off. A list of 400 issues does not tune the piano. Knowing which three keys to fix first does.

What an SEO action plan should give you

This is the standard I hold our own tool to. If a report does not do these things, it is giving you data, not answers. A task list with no value or effort attached is just more data. Every task should say what it is worth, the metric it moves and where it goes on the page: the title, the meta description, a heading or the body copy.

1. Ranked fixes with points

Every step in the elev8tor action plan shows the points it is worth toward the Content score, and the score if done. The target is 70. You start at the top, because the top item moves the score the most.

2. The exact sentence and anchor for every link

A tool that says “add more internal links” has told you nothing. The scanner names the page that should link, the exact sentence on that page and the anchor text to use, plus the weak anchors you already have. More on that in internal linking for AI search.

3. Measured against today's top 10

The content scanner reads today’s Google top 10 for your keyword, and up to 30 ranking pages for page factor correlations. It shows the Google category your page is filed under next to each ranking page, and flags it when Google files your page in a different category than page one. That single finding explains a lot of pages that never move.

4. Targets from the ranking pages, not fixed rules

Entity targets come from the density range the ranking pages actually use, not a fixed count. I explain why in entity coverage.

5. Predictions labeled as estimates

The scanner gives rank and AI pickup predictions, and it labels them estimates until they are calibrated. I would rather tell you a number is an estimate than pretend it is a promise.

6. Checked against real pages

Every month the scoring is checked against an internal benchmark of 30 real client pages from 18 client sites. If the score says a page is strong and the page does not rank, that is a reason to look hard at the scoring, not to tell the client a story.

7. Clear about what it leaves out

Page speed is deliberately not scored. Use a speed tool for speed. The Content score stays about what is on the page and how it is linked.

SEO data still matters, as context

I am not against data. I look at Search Console every week to find searches where I show up and do not get the click, and I use those near misses to plan pages on topics people already search. When a page starts bringing leads, I want to know that too; SEO ROI is the number the business cares about. Keyword research, rank tracking, site audit and AI visibility modules in our SEO tools are all data. The difference is that every alert comes with How to fix, and the work queue ranks what to do by value.

One more thing I learned the hard way. I do not ask Google’s own AI for my content ideas.

“it’s going to give me correlated data that it already has.”

Data from the same source as everyone else gives you the same ideas as everyone else. A plan built from the gap between your page and the ranking pages is specific to you. The same goes for writing: AI content for SEO only works when it adds what page one is missing.

How to tell whether your SEO tool gives answers

  • Pick one page and one keyword. Does the tool tell you the first thing to change?
  • Does each fix say what it is worth?
  • Does a link suggestion name the source page, the sentence and the anchor?
  • Does it compare you to the pages ranking today?
  • Does it say which numbers are estimates?

If the answer is no to most of those, keep that tool for research and get your fixes somewhere else. The Content Scanner is an add-on on any paid plan, and elev8tor pricing lists the credits. For the story of who built it and why, see about elev8tor.ai.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A ranked list of changes for one page and one keyword, each with what it is worth, measured against the pages ranking today. It answers what to change first, not just what the numbers are.

It scores a page from 0 to 100 for its keyword against today’s Google top 10, with a target of 70. The action plan shows how many points each fix adds and the score if done. Rankability adds internal link support on top of the Content score.

No. Rank and AI pickup predictions are labeled estimates until they are calibrated, and nobody can promise a ranking. The scoring itself is checked monthly against a benchmark of 30 real client pages from 18 client sites.

It was left out on purpose so the Content score stays about what is on the page and how it is linked. Check speed with a dedicated speed tool.

Maybe. They have far larger keyword and backlink databases and more marketing modules. elev8tor focuses on page level fixes against today’s top 10, AI findability, site mapping, lead tracking to GA4 and white label reporting. Some teams use both.
